About Us
I’m Josh, the owner of Smiley Electric.
I started Smiley Electric to support my dream of working on projects and improving lives all over the world. The dream started at an early age and bloomed into a lasting passion.
When I was just nine years old, I remember meeting a family friend who had spent time traveling the world as an electrician. He did volunteer work on various, commercial, residential, and natural disaster construction projects. I was so impressed! I remember thinking how cool it was to have a useful skill that could help others while traveling around the world.
I decided there and then that I wanted to be an electrician.
I started as an electrician at just seventeen years old. Initially, it was just a summer job, but my love for the work urged me to pursue a career with it. I continued my education, obtaining state licensing in Colorado and Oregon.
That was when I also started to discover all the cool tools that came with the job too (what can I say–I’m a sucker for a spiffy tool!) I’ve always been interested in learning new things and, to this day, enjoy a project that requires creative problem-solving and a little elbow grease!
In 2008, I bought my first new work truck: an old Chevy G2500 van. I had a family member design a business logo to put on the side of it. That classic “Smiley” logo on the truck brought me one step closer to starting my own family-owned business. Continuing my education was vital, so I attended my first solar class in 2009 and hired my first apprentice in 2010.
By far the greatest and most valuable addition to the family business has been my wife.
For over 20 years, she has brought such valuable balance to the business. She’s our problem-solver, our HR rep, and our voice of reason! The business would not be where it is today without her.
Together our business, life, and faith have grown throughout our journey. It’s an honor to get to work together doing what we love— bringing a little light to our community!
Together we’ve had the privilege to do volunteer work on projects in Portugal, Bolivia, Mozambique, New York, Florida, and Puerto Rico. I’ve personally worked on disaster relief projects in the US Virgin Islands, and Puerto Rico as well.
It’s been an incredible journey together!
The people I meet thanks to this line of work have been life-altering. Meeting a fellow electrician across the world who does the same job with a different approach has taught me invaluable lessons to implement into my own family business (and created lasting friendships too). This unique hands-on education has brought a fresh approach to the work we do for our neighbors in our hometown of Portland, Oregon.
I started Smiley Electric to help bring smiles (and a little “light”) to communities all over the world. I’ll never forget the friend who inspired me at a young age to care for my community, wherever the work might take me. I still carry that passion into every job I do today.
