Watt's Our Story
It started when Josh Smiley was nine years old.
Growing up in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, Josh watched an electrician change out the
electrical panel and meter on his parents’ home during a remodel. He sat outside for
hours, completely captivated. He didn’t know it then, but that afternoon would shape
the next three decades of his life.
“Looking back now — knowing what it’s like when a homeowner watches your every
move — I realize how patient that electrician must have been with me,” Josh says with
a laugh. “I’m grateful he was kind enough to let me watch.”
That curiosity grew into purpose. Josh watched friends volunteer on large construction
projects around the world through his religious organization — building communities,
solving problems, making a difference with their hands. He knew that was the kind of
work he wanted to do.
At seventeen, Josh moved with his family to Denver, Colorado. He spent summers
working for an electrician friend, learning the trade from the ground up. That experience
led him to a formal apprenticeship and eventually to starting his own electrical company
in Denver in 2009 — just him, his tools, and a commitment to doing the work right.
Over the years Josh worked on everything from water treatment plants to light fixtures
in people’s homes. He traveled internationally, volunteering his electrical skills on
projects for his religious organization in countries around the world. He became a
supervising electrician and earned his license in multiple states.
In 2018 Josh relocated to Portland, Oregon — arriving after completing a school to
teach the Bible in Portuguese. He earned his Oregon license and built Smiley Electric
into the company it is today: a licensed, COBID-certified, Black-owned electrical
contractor serving homeowners and businesses across the Portland metro area.
“I try my best to let my work support my life — and my life support my work,” Josh says.
“Every job we do, whether it’s a panel upgrade in Beaverton or a commercial
renovation in Portland, we bring the same care and commitment we would to any
project anywhere in the world.”
