Commercial LED Lighting Upgrade at Northwest ADHD Center: What We Found & Fixed

Project Overview: Fluorescent to LED Lighting Upgrade

We were onsite at the Northwest ADHD Center to replace aging fluorescent fixtures with modern LED bulbs. The goal was simple: • Improve energy efficiency • Enhance lighting quality • Address malfunctioning fixtures

LED lighting provides better light output, lower energy costs, and longer lifespan, making it an ideal upgrade for commercial spaces.

Initial Findings: Malfunctioning & Flickering Lights

During the walkthrough, we immediately noticed: • Several fixtures completely out • One fixture flickering continuously • Aging fluorescent components

One light appeared to be a simple bulb failure, while another showed signs of a deeper electrical issue.

Troubleshooting the Flickering Fixture

After replacing the bulb, the flickering continued — confirming the issue was not the bulb itself.

Our inspection included: • Checking internal wiring • Inspecting the ballast • Verifying power supply

All tested correctly. The issue was isolated to a faulty LED driver integrated into the socket, preventing a steady electrical connection.

Solution

- Identified the defective driver • Documented findings • Discussed options with the client • Removed the bulb per client request to prevent further flickering

This approach avoided unnecessary replacements and ensured transparency.

Fixture Adjustments for LED Compatibility

Unlike older fluorescent bulbs with 360° light output, LED retrofit bulbs contain rear-mounted drivers.

To ensure proper light distribution: • Fixture orientation was adjusted • Bulbs were repositioned to face forward • Covers were cleaned before reinstallation

These small adjustments significantly improved the final appearance.

Electrical Controls & Timer Switches

The exterior lighting system was controlled by: • A timer switch • Contactors within the electrical room • Dedicated breaker (Circuit #6)

Because the work focused on fixture replacement, full power shutdown was not required, allowing efficient progress while maintaining safety.

Exterior Lighting Walkthrough & Observations

After reinstallation, we performed a full exterior walk-through and identified: • One additional fixture without power • One flickering fixture confirmed to be driver-related • Uneven light distribution across the parking lot

These findings were documented and reviewed with the client.

Future Recommendations: Pole Lighting for Safety

Beyond the immediate scope, we evaluated the property for improved lighting coverage.

Our Recommendations

- Add new pole lights in the center parking area • Improve lighting near the playground • Balance light distribution across the property

Installation Considerations

- Power would need to be run from the main panel • Trenching would likely be required • Underground conduit installation would be necessary

While this represents a larger investment, it would significantly improve safety, visibility, and usability of the outdoor space.
