Portland, OR Project: Subpanel Installation & Overhead Electrical Service Work
Electrical panels are one of the most important components of a home’s electrical system. When an existing panel is outdated, damaged, or no longer suitable for the property’s electrical needs, replacing it with a properly installed panel can improve safety, organization, and reliability.
For this Portland, Oregon project, Smiley Electric, Inc. completed a subpanel installation along with overhead electrical service work. The project involved removing the existing panel, mounting the new panel, completing the panel wiring, upgrading the grounding connection, and assisting with the overhead service connection.
The result was a professionally installed electrical panel and service setup prepared for inspection.
Project Overview
The project began with removing the old electrical panel and preparing the location for the new equipment. The work included:
- Removing the existing panel
- Mounting the new subpanel
- Completing the panel makeup and connections
- Landing the new grounding conductor
- Installing grounding components
- Checking voltage
- Testing breaker operation
- Completing overhead service work
- Installing the required mast components
Replacing a panel isn’t simply a matter of moving wires from an old enclosure into a new one. The entire installation needs to be evaluated to ensure the wiring, grounding, service equipment, and connections are properly configured. New Subpanel Installation
The new subpanel was mounted and wired to provide a clean and organized distribution point for the property’s electrical circuits.
Our electrician completed the necessary connections inside the panel and verified that the breakers were operating correctly. After the installation, voltage was checked throughout the system to confirm that the electrical equipment was receiving the expected power.
Overhead Service Work
The project also required work on the property’s overhead electrical service. This portion of the project included:
- Setting the LB for the rigid pipe
- Installing the service mast
- Installing flashing
- Installing the weatherhead
- Running service conductors up to the weatherhead
- Making the necessary connections from the house
- Sealing penetrations with electrical putty
The service mast and weatherhead are important components of an overhead electrical service because they help protect and properly route the service conductors entering the property.
Grounding the Electrical System
A new grounding connection was also installed as part of the project. Our team installed a ground run, routed the grounding conductor, landed the new grounding wire, and verified the electrical connections.
Proper grounding is an essential part of a safe electrical system and helps provide a path for fault current when necessary.
Service Mast & Guy Support
The service mast also required a guy support kit as part of the installation.
During the project, the roof presented a significant safety challenge. It was wet and steep, and there wasn’t a safe location to attach a harness while working on the roof. Rather than taking an unnecessary safety risk, the work was approached carefully and the guy kit was installed on the mast as required.
The mast and associated service equipment were then prepared for inspection.
Testing & Final Inspection Preparation
Before wrapping up the project, our team checked the electrical system to make sure everything was functioning properly. The final steps included checking system voltage, testing breakers, verifying electrical connections, confirming the grounding installation, sealing openings and penetrations, cleaning the work area, and reviewing the completed work with the customer.
The completed installation was left ready for inspection.
