Portland is a strong EV city, but wiring a charger into a 1910s Craftsman is a different job than a new build off I-5. The car's charger is the small part; the Level 2 circuit is the real work. Across the inner east side, in Sellwood, Alberta, Buckman, and Irvington, the panel usually sits in a basement or on a side wall while the car parks in a detached garage or off the alley, so how far the power has to travel matters more than which unit you buy.

We install both hardwired chargers and plug-in NEMA 14-50 outlets across the city. On older Portland lots, hardwired is often the better call: it supports higher speeds and sidesteps the nuisance GFCI-breaker tripping an outdoor outlet can have. A quality Level 2 unit, a Tesla Wall Connector included, typically runs $350 to $650, and the rest is the wiring.

The long run to a detached garage

The single biggest cost swing on a Portland install is distance. A charger a few feet from the panel is quick; a run out to a detached garage at the back of a Woodstock or Sellwood lot can mean a trench, conduit, and a long conductor pull, and the longer that run, the heavier the wire has to be to hold voltage at the car. Does your Portland panel have the room?

The second question is capacity. A modern 200-amp panel with open slots usually takes a charger with no fuss. The permit and city inspection

A 240-volt charger circuit requires an electrical permit in Oregon; it isn't optional, and a permitted, inspected install is what keeps your insurance clean. Inside the city, that runs through Portland Permitting & Development, which issues the permit and performs the inspection itself. Charging without a garage

Plenty of inner Portland homes never had a garage, and the car lives in a driveway, a parking pad, or off the alley. That does not rule out home charging; it just changes the hardware.
