Tigard didn't grow all at once, and its wiring reflects that. Much of the housing dates to the long stretch from the 1960s through the 1990s, with newer, larger homes added up on Bull Mountain and a smaller pocket of genuinely older homes near downtown and Main Street. Homes from the 1970s and 80s are often still on their original panels, and some carry brands now flagged by insurers. Newer Bull Mountain homes usually just need more room. We open the panel before we decide which it is.

When your Tigard home needs an upgrade

The classic signs cut across eras: lights dimming when a large appliance starts, a panel with no open slots, or a plan to add a Level 2 charger, a heat pump, or an induction range. An upgrade replaces the old service with a modern panel, usually 200 amps, with new breakers and code-current grounding.

Two eras of service, one utility

A Tigard panel job depends on which Tigard you live in. Up on Bull Mountain, the newer, larger homes generally came with underground service and 200-amp panels, so an upgrade there is more often about a relocation or a subpanel than a small service straining. Down nearer downtown and Main Street, the older homes are the ones on overhead drops and smaller services, where the mast, meter base, and grounding may all be as dated as the panel and worth handling together in one visit.

Whichever end of town you are in, your power comes from Portland General Electric, so a heavier service means scheduling the meter disconnect and reconnect with PGE and timing it to the city inspection. Tigard runs its own building program, so unlike some neighbors it does not send the electrical to Washington County, and we coordinate the utility outage and the city inspector so the two line up on the same day.

My Bull Mountain home is newer. Do I need a panel upgrade for an EV charger?

Frequently not. Many of Tigard's newer Bull Mountain homes were built with enough capacity to add a dedicated Level 2 charger circuit without a full upgrade.
